OTL school’s about to start and I’m only done 4 routes. Oh well, I get to go home at 1:45 PM this semester so I’ve plenty of time to keep playing.
This time I went for Shizuru (the romanization is given as Sizuru officially, but I got too used to using Shizuru so the former looks weird), the loli character of Rewrite. She’s on year below Kotarou, and loves sanma (mackerel pike?). She’s in the discipline committee and also got scarily sharp hearing, good eyesight, and the ability to lip-read. She’s shy and doesn’t talk much, instead making a lot of moe facial expressions. Obviously, there’s more to her…
Kotarou meets Gil and Pani in this route, but they don’t have as important of a role as in Chihaya’s route. Shizuru has supernatural powers just like Kotarou. While Kotarou kept his “rewriting” ability (yes, after 4 routes I figure out its name), the ability to strenghten body parts, from being known by other people and lived life as normal, Shizuru’s healing power was discovered early during a fire accident where her right eye turned gold (and that’s why she wears an eyepatch). Some guy in a black suit offered to send her to another school, and she agreed to go because her family became more screwed up after the accident. At the school she made friends with other people who have powers, but at that time she didn’t know that she also had the power to erase memories. Without knowing it, she erased all memories of herself from her parents, and now they have no idea who she is and have a new daughter named Shizuka. Now she’s living by herself in a completely empty house because she can’t afford furniture. He gives her his old iPod because she can’t afford a CD player.
The incident on the 13th happens and the occult club breaks up. On the next Monday, Kotarou wakes up and figures out that Gil and Pani are demons just like the black dogs and leaf dragon. He tells them off and goes to school, only to find out that a month has passed since the forest incident and he has apparently transferred away. He doesn’t really remember the 13th clearly, nor does he remember the occult club members until Yoshino tells him. Since there’s no spot for him at school, Kotarou goes home to find that his wallet has shitloads of cash and a piece of paper with Guardian’s phone number (but he can’t reach it) and Esaka’s name. His cellphone is also broken so he can’t contact anyone by phone.
Kotarou goes to Esaka’s store to ask about what happened, but Esaka’s not entirely sure so he calls the Guardian headquarters to ask abut Shizuru. They hear that Shizuru is in bed right now so they head to the HQ to see her in a coma. Nishikujou has no idea what happened either, and Kotarou sits beside Shizuru to try and remember what happened. Essentially half the route happens as a flashback to the real Monday after the forest incident.
Kotarou woke up, and asked Gil and Pani about the demons. They explain to him the whole Gaia vs. Guardian thing and Shizuru comes looking for him. She starts living with him to keep an eye on him because he’s in danger, and he decides to join Guardian. Nishikujou arranges for his transfer from school, and he starts working part-time at Esaka’s shop which pays loads of cash. Lucia (also in Guardian, obviously) is being transferred to another town and won’t be attending school anymore, so Kotarou and Shizuru decide to have a mock graduation with her because none of them will actually graduate high school. Lucia and Shizuru never graduated from anywhere because they didn’t stay at any school for long.
Nishikujou tells Kotarou that extended use of hie rewriting ability will render him inhuman so he shouldn’t use it so much. Everyone basically tells him he’s not suited for combat. One day, Kotarou sees Kotori get on a bus, and the bus leads to the forest so he goes in there after her. He calls Shizuru to inform her about it, and then goes into the forest by himself despite repeated warning that the forest is dangerous and he’s too noob at fighting. He tries to find Kotori but instead finds the polluted river instead. His GPS app stops working because reception in the forest sucks and night comes. He gets attacked by the Earth Dragon, and Shizuru arrives just as he is dying. Her healing isn’t working on him, but somehow he lives and she erased his memory to protect him.
Back in the present, Kotarou hears some voice (not god) and he tells it that no matter what, he wants to be with Shizuru. The voice disappears and she wakes up. After telling the people in Guardian about Shizuru waking up, he hears that the polluted river with rainbow-colored water is due to the effect of power spots and it’s harmful towards humans. Kotarou and Shizuru goes to Gen’s ramen shop only to bump into Yoshino, who knows something is obviously up. But since he’s a good bro, he can tell that Kotarou won’t explain so he doesn’t demand answers. They promise to have a proper duel one day as rivals and he leaves.
Gaia sends out a large number of demons and attack the Guardian HQ. They send Esaka out to battle, and Kotarou wants to go but he’s like “NO YOU TOO FAIL AT FIGHTING” and goes off himself. Kotarou goes out into battle anyways, and Esaka is like “FUUU YOU IDIOT” and makes him go bring an injured guy to Shizuru. After healing, Shizuru goes with Kotarou to fight only to see Guardian members get owned by Sakuya. When Kotarou gets bitten by a black dog, he feels no pain but Shizuru feels it instead. Shizuru and Sakuya start fighting, but Chihaya tells him to stop because she doesn’t want to fight her friends. Sakuya warns Kotarou not to use his rewriting ability too much and leaves. Back at the control room, they find out that Gen’s place also got attacked and he dies. After the attack, Shizuru is the only deplyable fighter and Kotarou is the only deployable person who is able to see the Key so the two are sent into the forest to look for it.
The set out on a motorcycle towards the forest and we get an awesome CG of Kotarou driving and Shizuru shooting demons on the road. It turns out that she lost the ability to hear after waking up, and has difficulties talking. Nishikujou come down to help them blast off demons and they reach the forest. It’s surprisingly quiet and defenseless, so it appears that they’re the first ones there. They see Kagari and Shizuru shoots her using the special rifle that can kill her, but nothing happens. Akane comes and tells them that the Key has decided on destroying the world and is already into its stable period, which means the Kagari they see is an empty shell. Nishikujou uses up all her energy blasting the Key in hopes that a miracle will occur and destruction will stop, but it doesn’t work and she dies. World destruction begins, and people start disappearing. Akane, Chihaya, Lucia and Yoshino disapppear, and Esaka calls Kotarou to tell them not to give up and try to save the world. They go to Shizuru’s parents’ house to save them, but they disappear right before their eyes. They meet up at the park with Esaka, who dies too.
Kotarou is actually supposed to be dead back when he got attacked in the forest, but Shizuru gave him her life so they technically share the same life right now, and when he gets wounded the pain goes to her instead. The life-sharing is like the bond between a demon and a demon user, but Shizuru isn’t one so it works differently. Kotarou gives her her life back, and she can finally hear and talk properly again. He hugs her and tells her that he’s going now, but he will be back in a different form and they will meet then. He tells her to go, and then Gil and Pani join him to die.
At the end, Shizuru took refuge with a group of other survivors of world destruction and they try to live on. She starts writing in a diary about the days after the destruction, and listens to Kotarou’s iPod and his recording (lol, like a e-love letter). Over a month later, she goes outside to see a tree that she feels warmth from and recognizes it as Kotarou. Tree-Kotarou says “I told you, I’m back.” and the credits roll.
For some reason, this route felt like it went by very fast. If it focused on Shizuru and her parents’ lost memories rather than Guardian and the destruction of the world, it would have felt very Key-like. Unfortunately, the world destruction in this route didn’t have as much impact as the one in Akane’s route either, so I felt that writing a tear-jerking scene about Shizuru and her parents would probably give it more impact. It had pretty good build up, but the resolution with them just disappearing was kinda weak. It could have been heart-breaking, but the scene ended before I could get emotional. Kotarou also stayed stupid from beginning to end, and ended up as a tree lol. At least the couple got some kind of closure. Kotarou and Shizuru’s interactions were pretty cute since she’s shy and moe, but the impact and emotions in the route were underwhelming. It got pretty decent near the end when Kotarou was dying and when Shizuru wrote in her journal.
Only Lucia route to go for the regular heroines, and then I’ll end up in Moon route. I’ll be praying that it doesn’t have too much difficult Japanese. I’ve noticed so far that Kagari is only referred to by her name in Chihaya’s route. In all the other routes they just call her the Key.
