Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal 17 – Stranger Danger

I’m getting less and less motivated to watch Zexal due to Disgaea 3…but this episode is plot-relevant.

The episode starts off with two guys dueling, and one of them uses No. 16, Ruler of Color – Shock Ruler. He loses and the other guy reveals himself as Jin, someone working under the Numbers Hunter Kaito. Jin takes the guy’s Numbers and his soul, just like Kaito. Yuuma runs to school, full of energy due to the new cards he got, thinking that with the new cards he can now take revenge on Kaito because experience and skill obviously don’t come into play. Astral is still depressed because he lost a children’s card game. Kotori, Testuo and class president show Yuuma recent news of duelists who got their Numbers taken and turned old and wrinkly.

Class prez asks if Yuuma is gonna turn out like that since he has Numbers, but Yuuma pretends not to know anything (since he hasn’t told anyone about Kaito’s soul-stealing). Yuuma runs away lol. He talks to Astral about Kaito and Numbers, but then Kathy (remember? Catgirl from ep 9 filler) hears and they run away. Since Yuuma keeps running away, the side characters (Kotori, Tetsuo, class prez, Tokunosuke, Kathy) form a Numbers Club to research about Numbers. The only one who actually knows how to research IRL here is class prez, because he is using the internet instead of looking in sewers, asking cats to do it, or trying to talk to random people on the street who have a job and are clearly not interested in a children’s card game. Kotori meets Shark, who tells her not to get involved with Numbers.

None of them actually come up with anything other than Tokunosuke, who found a fortune-teller. The fortune-teller (obviously Jin) leads the kids inside his creepy old mansion with the promise that he can help them find what they want. Yuuma’s school seriously needs proper education on stranger danger, especially when the stranger actually looks suspicious and creepy. Jin tells them that Numbers are evil cards that will take your sou. Kotori’s like, “ho shit, Yuuma’s soul!” and Jin catches on that Yuuma has Numbers. He brainwashes her into telling him about Yuuma and then breaks the floor, causing them to fall into another room with the exception of Kathy, who has mad ninja skills and is able to jump back up and run away.

Kathy tries to tell Yuuma that everyone’s in danger, but Jin possesses her and tells him to duel him with his Numbers or else he will take their lives. He reveals that he is helping Kaito and then depossesses Kathy. Yuuma tells Kathy to bring him there, but Astral tells him not to go because it’s a trap. Yuuma doesn’t care, but Astral reminds him that he cannot win against Kaito. Yuuma’s like “SO YOU DON’T DUEL PEOPLE THAT YOU HAVE LESS THAN 100% OF WINNING AGAINST!???” and Astral says yes because dueling is his life, literally. And theyn he says that it’s too bad, but because they can’t win against Kaito, he’ll have to ditch his friends. Yuuma gets pissed and tries to punch a ghost. He decides to ditch Astral and go save his friends alone.

Meanwhile, the side character gang is trapped on a island amist a pit of magma. Yuuma, Kathy, and Astral (who came anyways) arrive and Jin challenges Yuuma to a duel.

Jin taks the first turn. He summons Orange Shaman, sets one card face down and TURN END.

Yuuma’s turn. He summons Gogogo Golem. Jin activates Orange Shaman’s effect: when the opponent summons an effect monster, he can special summon a monster from his hand with the name Shaman in it. He summons Red Shaman. Astral warns Yuuma that if someone summons a monster with 0 ATK in attack position, they’re obviously planning something, but Yuuma’s like “LOL I’LL DEAL LOTS OF DAMAGE TO HIM SINCE HIS MOSNTERS HAVE 0 ATK.” He attacks Orange Shaman with Gogogo Golem, but Jin activates the trap card Shugoshin no Mai (“Dance of the Protector”). When the opponent attacks, he can target one of his cards and if it is a monster card, the attack is negated, and the card is sent to the graveyard. The chosen card is Yuuma’s beloved Gagaga Magician, so the attack is negated and GGG Magician is sent to the graveyard. Jin also gets to draw one card. Since that was Yuuma’s only monster card out of his hand of 5, theyc conclude that the guy is psychic and can see everything. Yuuma places one card face down and TURN END.

Jin’s turn. He uses the spell card Shaman Call: if he controls 2 or more spellcaster-type monsters with 0 ATK, he can special summon a monster with the name Shaman from his deck. He summons Green Shaman. He overlays his Shamans to Exceed summon No. 16, Ruler of Color – Shock Ruler. He activates its effect, removing 1 OLU to prevent a certain type of card to be used until Yuuma’s next end phase. He knows that Yuuma has a face-down trap card, so he chooses to make trap card unuseable. I don’t think this is magical powers as it is being duel savvy, because the face down cards are almost always trap cards in the anime. He attacks Yuuma’s Gogogo Golem with Shock Ruler and Yuuma’s LP drop to 3500. A part of the island the side characters are standing on breaks off, and Jin tells Yuuma that their lives are linked to his LP. If he loses his friends will fall into the magma and die.
