Lol this time it’s completely my fault that I’m late since I was grinning like a maniac for hours after getting my first contract (yes I MAHOU SHOUJO now). I completely forgot about Zexal yesterday. As a side note, this episode is entirely skippable and the old cards only appear for a little bit before a random unrelated plot is thrown in.
This episode begins off with Yuuma and Astral angsting about getting owned by Kaito, and then Kotori and Tetsuo show up to tell them about the World Duel Carnival. It’s a tournament consisting of the strongest duelists in the world (like all tournaments claim to be) and it will be held in Heartland this time. Just as Yuuma is thinking that Kaito will definitely be in the tournament, his grandmother appears and makes him deliver a huge bag of vegetables to some old man in a shrine (that you can only get to after climbing longass stairs). Astral is still in his angsty position and doesn’t say anything. The shrine is actually some kind of dueling dojo and the old man’s name is Rokujuro. Back at home, Onee-chan is pissed that Granny sent Yuuma to a dueling dojo and says that dueling is dangerous for Yuuma. Granny believes that Yuuma will find a new goal through dueling. Hmm…I wish I could find my goal in life through playing games (no, NEET does not count).
Rokujuro makes Yuuma, Kotori and Tetsuo clean up and then he goes off into some room. Yuuma got bored of dusting the floor and goes into the room the old name went into to find…
STATUES OF OLD DUEL MONSTERS! They’re apparently legendary now. Old man challenges Yuuma to a duel. Basically statue version of the monsters are set on his field (Blue Eyes Statue Dragon, Red Eyes Statue Dragon, Statue Dark Magician, Statue Dark Magician Girl) but they have 0 ATK and cannot attack.
Yuuma uses B2 Zone, which negates the “statue” effect of the monsters and they turn into the actual monsters. Rokujuro says that that is not actually moving, and he will show him the real duel. They get transported into an alternate world, where Yuuma becomes Dark Magician and his human body is a statue. Rokujuro uses Polymerization to fuse 3 Blue Eyes Statue Dragons into Blue Eyes Ultimate Statue Dragon. I’m not even going to bother translating the duel because Yuuma basically gets KO’ed and Rokujuro tells him that monsters feel fear when they get attacked too.
The next day, Yuuma is polishing the statues and finds a huge crack on one of them. Rokujuro walks outside and and a dude carrying a sword approaches him, telling him he came back and calls him “teacher”. He says something about coming back from the darkness and whips out his duel disk. Lololol why you even carry around a sword? They duel, and the guy defeats Rokujuro. The guy walks into the dojo and sees Yuuma. Rokujuro tells him to run away. Flashback time! Basically this guy is Yamikawa and he got owned by Rokujuro, who is pissed that he decided to go down the path of darkness rather than light. He rages and slashes apart one of Rokujuro’s statues and leaves, promising that he will come back one day and defeat him and take his deck. Rokujuro refuses to give him the deck so he gets into rage mode again and prepares to slash another statue, but Yuuma stops him out of nerd rage (NO ONE MESSES WITH STATUE COLLECTION OF OLD MONSTERS. NO ONE.) and claims to be Rokujuro’s disciple. They duel.
Yuuma’s turn. He summons Gagaga Magician, places one card face down and TURN END.
Yamikawa’s turn. He summons Armored Ninja Flame and uses the spell card Armored Ninpo Quick Teleport, which allows him to special summon a monster from his hand with lower attack than Flame. He summons Armored Ninja Air. Quick Teleport prevents both of them from attacking this turn, but he Overlays them to Exceed Summon Armored Ninja Blade Heart (2200 ATK). He uses it to attack Gagaga Magician, but Yuuma activates the trap card Gagaga Shield, which can be equipped onto a Spellcaster-type and prevent it from being destroyed twice. Yuuma still receives the damage and his LP drops to 3300. Yamikawa removes one Overlay Unit from Blade Heart to allow it to attack again, destroying the Gagaga Shield and Yuuma takes damage once again, dropping to 2600 LP. The episode ends with Yuuma saying that his monsters are his friends so he’ll protect them.
Boring episode is boring. No Numbers, no main plot, and the DM cards only appeared for a little bit before making way for stupid ninja dude and his lousy backstory that we’ve totally never seen before. It was pretty much a snoozefest and I hate how so many duels are two-parters when they’re not even interesting. This is just some random side plot to get Yuuma and Astral to stop angsting about losing a card game, which can be done in many more interesting ways.
