Today was the last day of exams for me, so my summer break officially starts tomorrow…Not that exam time didn’t feel like break. I only had two exams this semester so it wasn’t stressful at all. In fact, for both courses, I would’ve still passed even if I skipped my exam. Now I’ve got a little more than 1 week of break before I’m sent off to summer school. It doesn’t really change anything though–school or not, all I do is play games. Having good grades while slacking (my idea of good grade = 85+ so I’m pretty lax) is an useful skill. Now that exams are over, there’s only three things I want to do not including the basic necessities of sleeping, eating and breathing: play games to the max, work on my comic, and maaaaaaaybe visit my servant.
In the games department, I’m waiting to pickup my pre-order of Persona 3 Portable. I haven’t played the game before, seeing how I got into gaming really late and didn’t own a PS2 until last Christmas. Yes, I had to survive on handhelds only for several years since the only Wii games I had were WiiSports and WiiPlay.
I cleared both Creation endings for Hexyz Force before exam week and now I’m back to try for the true/neutral end since I want to fight the harder boss. Maybe I’ll try this again on hard mode later on =) HF is actually a very good RPG for the PSP, despite how cliched it sounds. Despite having a typical storyline RPG oldies are all used to, I think it was executed very well. There’s two different sides of the story featuring seperate party members for the most part, and they differ enough for this game to be considered “two RPGs in one.” Then, at the last two chapters, everyone joins up together for the epic boss fight (but you are only allowed to have 3 party members in action, like always). The two paths come together for a finale, and you get a total of nine party members at the end. It’s not like the 108 characters in the Suikoden series, but 9 is plenty for an RPG, and it covers most of the typical classes. Gameplay is easy only if you grind or increase the ragnafacts’ levels as soon as possible. Beating the game without ever upgrading the ragnafacts is quite a feat. Graphics-wise, the sprites and backgrounds are pretty standard for a 3D PSP game. I usually play 2D games and am the “gameplay over graphics” type of person, so I’m easily wowed by well-done 3D graphics. Just like how Suikoden Tierkreis totally surprised me with the gorgeous 3D backgrounds, I was amazed when I first saw the Tower of Judgement. It may not be all that stunning for someone used to console or 3D PSP games, but the visuals for Hexyz Force are good enough. The character sprites are very cute–and that’s coming from someone who isn’t a fan of 3D sprites at all.
Hexyz Force hooked me in right from the beginning. Maybe it’s the attractive character portraits or the fact that it’s an original RPG for the PSP or whatever, but I liked it from the very beginning. Of course, I’m no gaming veteran so maybe I haven’t gotten tired of the “blah blah blah chosen one to prevent the world from destruction” plots, but I truely thought this was an awesome RPG. My main complaint would be that it was too short. It took me 22 hours for my first playthrough for Cecilia’s story (without skipping since I didn’t know pressing R would speed up battles), and a total of 35 hours to get clear data from both routes. However, I am very satisfied with the rest of the game, and would like to see more original RPGs like the for the PSP. This game made me like STING a lot more, so I might give Riviera another try (I wasn’t fond of breakable weapons).
Overall rating: 8.5/10
I’m not a harsh critic at all. I’m still at the age where everything seems fresh and wonderful, like when most people first played Chrono Trigger as a kid. I’ve got the DS version of that game lying in the drawer, so I might get around to playing that after P3P this summer. I’ve also got Odin Sphere and FFX-2 on my list, since my friend lent them to me for the summer. Apparently she ragequit them a lot, so I might not finish them.

I’m aiming to complete Pearl pokedex first. The Jirachi wi-fi event starts on June 26! I hope they have more wi-fi events giving out pokemon, since I’ll have a hard time getting my event legendaries. I missed when they gave out Shaymin since my internet was down T_T
